The old movie theater in our town smelled of dust and sugar. Of red velvet seats whose color had faded over the decades, and of the cool metal of the rattling projector. I remember the bits of popcorn stuck between my teeth and the soggy cardboard Coke cups left at the end of the film. In the dark, my fingers nervously searched for your hand. My heart felt like it might burst from my chest when our lips met. My first kiss – and suddenly the world was different. On the screen, colors flared, telling stories of heroes, revolution, and a kind of freedom that was supposed to belong to us. Someone once told me we were the children of Karl Marx and Coca-Cola. Between cigarette smoke and flickering light, we believed we knew everything. Understood everything. Ideals in one hand, sugar water in the other – it all felt overwhelmingly important. The film ended, the credits rolled – and what remained was the taste of syrup, the smoke clinging to my clothes, and the sweetness of your lips.

A coming of age between consumption and critique – sweet-sour candy notes, the sugary fizz of cola, and a hint of warm popcorn meet dry smoke, tobacco, and dusty woods.

Behind the Fragrance

Today I remembered small pleasures, seeing a familiar name in a newspaper.

Eating sour candy.

The soda soaked cup at the end of a visit to the cinema, and my sore tongue picking at popcorn kernels stuck in my teeth.

What a big achievement. Just like the films they put on for me.

A favorite of mine said I am part of the “children of Karl Marx and Coca Cola”. I'm not sure what he meant, but I never want to forget again. The characters burned so almost only the cigarette butts remained. We held hands. Children were conceived in that cinema, and grown-ups turned back.

Someone gave me a light.

Toskovat
