A day in childhood that stands apart: the annual fair is in town. On Saturday, everyone knows what’s coming. A visit is unavoidable. With the first step onto the wide open ground where the fair has been set up, a sweet, sticky scent fills the air - cotton candy and bubblegum. Stall after stall lines the way, vendors placing sugary treats into small and grown hands alike, indulgences reserved for days like this. In the background, shouts blend with the rattling of a small roller coaster. It rushes past, loud and impatient, leaving behind a haze of gasoline and the heated metal of its tracks. After a long wait in line, it’s finally your turn. The seat is still warm from the last rider, and an unexpected trace of rose lingers in the air. Where it comes from is unclear - and doesn’t matter.
